A strong sensory foundation in young children is essential for their learning and kindergarten preparation. Unstructured child-directed play in outdoor environments, coupled with sensory experiences, helps to equip children with strong foundational skills needed for their early development. By incorporating positive, appropriate experiences that engage children in unstructured play opportunities, early care and education professionals can help activate young children’s brain development.

This year’s School Readiness Symposium will include keynote presenter: Angela Hanscom, author of the book "Balanced and Barefoot: How Unrestricted Outdoor Play Makes for Strong, Confident, and Capable Children."

Highlights will include:

  • Why has there been a decline in outdoor play?

  • Why are we seeing a rise in sensory issues?

  • What are the benefits of unstructured play?

  • What are some key strategies that early childhood educators can apply to their early childhood settings?
