Institute Objectives

  • Enhance understanding of the impact infant and toddler play has on learning, and discover why play throughout the day is possible, and essential

  • Explore the benefits of an early childhood where play is the foundation

  • Discover the importance of caring and joyful connections and ways early care professionals can create playful opportunities during routines

  • Learn how to create a positive environment to enhance natural learning opportunities where infants and toddlers can play, learn, and thrive

  • Promote networking, collaboration, and resource sharing among institute participants

The workshop sessions will be presented by highly qualified infant and toddler specialists and infant and toddler behavior consultants from nine regions across the state. As part of their work with the VA Infant & Toddler Specialist Network, they provide professional development and coaching to early care providers.

Building Caring and Joyful Connections

Infants and toddlers thrive when caring and joyful connections are created and nourished. Discover ways to build those connections during all stages of early development. In this workshop, participants will define caring connections and the importance they play in the development of infants and toddlers. We will discover the use of everyday materials to create engaging opportunities for infants and toddlers and discuss ways to incorporate playfulness into interactions during routines and activities.

Creating Playful Environments

Infant and toddler care is more than about feeding and diapering. Room set up, the items you choose, and the activities you plan can have an impact on development. Learn how to create a positive (playful) environment where children can explore and learn. Participants will learn to assess and modify infant and toddler environments and discover developmentally appropriate activities and materials for playful learning. Resources for improving infant and toddler classroom environments will be shared.
