Earth Hour: A Moment to Pause and Reflect
Saturday, March 27th at 8:30 PM local time is Earth Hour.
What is Earth Hour?
Traditionally, global skylines have gone dark and millions of individuals have turned off their lights for Earth Hour as a symbolic gesture to their commitment to preserving our planet.
EarthHour.Org encourages people to participate in the hopes to keep nature loss and climate change top of mind. It is that mindfulness and reflection that will encourage people of every generation to stop and reflect on the lovely fragility of this earth that holds the entirety of our past, our present, and our future.
The World Wildlife Post is hosting a meditative hour for peace and mindfulness Here. You can sign up for text reminders Here.
Reflection may be an important step, but it’s just the FIRST step. There are so many things you can do, even as an individual, to change the world for the better.
Educate Yourself

#GiveFundsGiveTime is a motto we came up with during our Giving Tuesday event last year, but we find that the concept behind it is one we want to keep top of mind ALL year long. If you don’t have the funds to donate, spend time educating yourself and others! Every time you pass on knowledge to someone, they pass it on to someone else. These good deeds ripple out. You may be one person, but one person spreading their love can change the world.
With Love,
Ms. LJ and your Common Ground Family
St. Anne's Episcopal Blood Drive!
As 2021 presses on, there are so many people who are in need! It can be overwhelming to decide where to start, and sometimes it is hard to tell if you’re really making a difference. (Although here at Common Ground, we really believe that all good deeds ripple out, no matter how small).
Donating blood costs no money and very little time, but it is a constant, essential need! Every 2 seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood. 1 donation can potentially save up to 3 lives.
St. Anne’s Episcopal Church is hosting a blood drive on March 5th!

WHERE: St. Anne’s Episcopal Church! There will be an INOVA Bloodmobile

GIVE TIME: Teacher Volunteers Needed!
We are calling on our fantastic parent community for a very unique volunteer opportunity!
We are looking for five parent volunteers a month to be on-call substitute teachers. These volunteers would be willing to go through a background check process and be willing to watch over a classroom should the need arise.
Please Note — This rarely happens. In the past we have only had the need for parent volunteers to help with watching classrooms while we allow our teachers to vote on election days. However, if the need did arise to have someone watch a classroom, we want to put our children in the hands of someone in our community we trust with a verified background check.
If you are interested, please contact either Ms. Liz or Ms. LJ for more details!
Every Day is a Holiday: HAT DAY!
THIS WEEK, FRIDAY, JANUARY 15TH, IS HAT DAY!
Big Hats! Little Hats! Long Hats! Short Hats! Hats with Spots! Hats with Ears! Homemade and Store-bought! Paper and Cloth!
We are celebrating HAT DAY on Friday at Common Ground and we are inviting EVERYONE to participate!
If you are a parent, please send your kiddo to school in their favorite hat! Please wear YOUR hat and send us a photo! We will make a collage just for the school so that we can all see how together we are, even apart.
If you feel comfortable posting on facebook, please post your picture in our prompt on the day and share the prompt! Lets see how many HAT pictures we can get!!
CG Challenges: A Mile a Day
Hello Everyone!
Miss Liz and I have been noticing the incredible benefits of daily, extended outside time on our students. They’re sturdier and more resilient. They have more energy but are simultaneously more able to pay attention.
With shorter days and bitter winds it is often harder to get out, especially after school and work. We totally get that. It is why we have started our own mile a day challenge. One mile of walking or running each day. That’s a twenty minute walk on average! It has been such a refreshing incentive to get out there even when we want to stay under our blankets and cuddle our dogs!
THEN we thought… do you know who would love this challenge? Our school-aged kids. They have to sit in front of the computer all day for school. Even if it’s cold, there is no better way to shake the sillies out than a brisk walk in the fresh air.
Monday through Friday, every day, we are going to get those kids out there, and we want you to join us! Walk a mile on your lunch break. Take a walk after work around your block or cul de sac. You’d be surprised how much energy you have for the rest of your Saturday if it begins with a mile in your shoes! It’s as good as a cup of coffee.
What do you think? Join us? We still have 26 days of January to go! You could also go from January 10 to February 10, or March 15 to April 15, every day is a new day to start something wonderful for yourself.
We will be posting our journey through January. Every day will be a little adventure, and while we are sharing ours, we hope you will share yours too! Do you have a little park by your house? Do you walk the trails? Do you prefer to bike the mile with your kiddos? Do you have a four-pawed companion that comes with you?
Post pictures or stories and use the hashtag #CGMileADay so we can see them all!
Show us what your mile looks like!
One mile a day… take that first step!
Miss LJ
Save the Date: Spirit Nights
In 2021 we will be having MONTHLY SPIRIT NIGHTS!
What’s a Spirit Night?
A Spirit Night is when a local restaurant supports Common Ground Childcare by giving a percentage of their sales profits for one evening! All you have to do is order food and let the restaurant know you are there to support Common Ground Childcare, and VOILA! You are helping us fundraise just by eating a good meal with your family!
It used to be we would gather at a restaurant and all eat together. These “Spirit Nights” were some of our absolute favorite evenings, especially in the cold months! The kids loved seeing their teachers and each other in a non-school setting.
These times will come again. And while we are waiting for them to return, we have decided that getting into the habit of scheduling them once a month will assure we all remember to save the dates!
We will post them as we get them, so be on the look out. SEE YOU THERE! And don’t forget to say “we’re here to support Common Ground.”
Our January and February Spirit Nights are on the calendar already!
On Saturday, January 16th you can support Common Ground by picking up Panera for your family! Delicious soups and hot fresh bread are the perfect combination to combat that cold, winter wind! (Click below for more info)
On Wednesday, February 10th our Spirit Night is at the North Point Baskin-Robbins! They are currently refurbishing their store so it will be EXTRA snazzy for those (almost) Valentine treats… Bring the kids, or make it a date!
Every Day is a Holiday: Pet Costumes and Polka Dots
NATIONAL DRESS YOUR PET IN A COSTUME DAY!
Thursday, January 14th we will be dressing our pets and/or stuffed animals in costumes! Send us a picture of your pet/Stuffy dressed to the nines and we will make a big collage of our Common Ground animal crew!
NATIONAL WEAR POLKA DOTS DAY!
Big dots! Little Dots! Multicolored dots! Dots with squiggles! Dots with stripes! Dots like Dalmatian Puppies! On Friday, January 22nd we will be wearing polka dots here at Common Ground and ask you to do the same!! Send us your pics so we can make our Polka Dot-Palooza Picture Gallery!
Holiday Events: Creative Tradition Twists and New Classics
The holidays are a time of giving. It is a time when we reflect on other’s needs, how we can show them we value their happiness over our own.
This holiday season we are encouraging you to find creative and lovely ways to celebrate that protects the health and happiness of those around you.
Is it hard? Absolutely. When we are tired and overstressed from a long and anxiety-inducing year, it can be hard to be creative and come up with new and exciting traditions.
Is it disappointing? In some very real ways! Not being able to see our grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. all around the same table is disappointing. I miss the big family rip-a-thon where we all pass over presents, knocking over each others’ hot ciders and laughing at “A Christmas Story” for the 100th time. I miss being crammed on Grandma’s old brown couch, that same green, orange, and brown quilt that is in every grandma’s house thrown over our legs. We all have dinners we are trying to justify, trips we are trying to make work, events that seem un-skippable.
Is it worth it? Yes.
Yes it is. It is worth protecting your loved ones every time. It is worth losing one year to have another decade or three of holidays ahead of you.
On December 9th the governor of Virginia implored his citizens to “use common sense” when considering any activity outside of the house.
While we do not have a policy, the health department recommends that you quarantine for 14 days both before and after travel.
That is Five Weeks away from daycare for your kids for one week of travel. There are much better ways to celebrate!
Need some ideas?
We are happy to share, and we ask that you share your ideas too! But here are some suggestions we have come up with here at Common Ground.
1. Ugly Ornament Exchange — Ship the silliest, whackiest, ugliest ornament to each other you can find. Make them personal, make them heartwarming, make them ridiculous. Then pick a day when you all sign onto Zoom and share them with each other! Vote on the absolute winner of the contest, and then the giver can REVEAL themselves the victor!
2. Group Decoration — If you’re local, pick someone’s front yard to have a tree. bring ornaments to decorate that tree together. Have the person who’s house it is post up photos as more and more ornaments get added.
3. Hanukkah Lights — Each night have someone else light the candles and lead the prayer over zoom! If you live close by you can also have one person each night make a dish for everyone and drop it off. If you don’t, or if this isn’t practical, you can also just show what you’re eating.
4. Dreidel Games — you can definitely play dreidel over zoom, discord, or anything where you can see each other!
5. Disney + has a feature where you can watch together called GroupWatch where you can all stream together at the same time! Watch your favorite holiday movies together.
6. Drive Through Holiday light shows have always been a huge tradition in my family. Check out THIS LINK for all of the safe drive-through light shows near you! You can also drive through your neighborhood with popcorn, a happy audiobook, or holiday music playing while you admire the lights.
7. Writing Letters — Let’s revive an old tradition as a new tradition. Handwriting Letters with drawings and words of affirmation has always been a way to show love from far away. There has never been a more appropriate time to do this. Make sure to pick up unique and lovely address labels from our MABELS LABELS fundraiser!!
8. Group Activity — My friends and I do the same themed party every year. This year we prepared goodie bags with paper plates and cups, stickers, party snacks, and party drinks all on theme for that party, dropped them off at everyone’s houses, and we will all be signing into discord together to be “together” anyway! It took a couple of hours of driving, but it is worth it to see everyone’s smiles.
9. Group Album — Create an online album where you all share your pictures and videos with each other. You can send each other video notes, share your #BakingFails, show off your decorations, and sing carols at various volumes. At the end of the year you can make a montage to show how you were all really together, even apart.
PLEASE share some of your new traditions and twists on old favorites! We are happy to post them all. Any way we can help make this holiday season amazing, we are willing to try!
Much Much Love,
LJ and the Common Ground Family
Thanksgiving Box Drive: BIG THANK YOU!!
Common Ground Family and Friends,
I am, as always, sincerely humbled by the giving hearts of our community. We had promised Cornerstones 6 lovingly decorated boxes, one for each classroom, and we ended up with 10 fully stocked Thanksgiving meals. That’s ten families that will get to celebrate with a proper meal on one of the most difficult holiday seasons in recent memory.
This was an elegant example of what our #GiveFundsGiveTime campaign is all about. Together, each of you giving a little time and money, we managed to pull of something magical.
And you know what? Our kids see that.
I had a student come up and ask us what else we needed. He was so excited to be a part of this with his family, and he wanted to know if there was anything missing from any of the boxes. He and his parents then went out, together, gathered the remaining items, and brought them in.
This was something they did as a family, something that this child genuinely enjoyed, and he could see, first hand, what a difference his items made.
He’s always had a good heart, but practice makes perfect. We are helping our kiddos work those giving muscles so that when they’re adults, they’ll be SUPER heroes.
After they were all packed and ready to go, I went over to our buddies at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church! They had gathered a whopping 54 BOXES!! SOME OF THEM GLUTEN-FREE!! I WAS ECSTATIC to be working with them!
With all of their helpful volunteers, we loaded up the Common Ground Bus and drove all 64 boxes over to the drop off station. I have to tell you, I love driving that bus, but loading would have been quite a big chore had everyone not been ready to give a little. They have been at this Thanksgiving Box drive thing for many years, so it has been really amazing working with the and learning all about how to make this an effective Giving campaign.
All together, working as a unit, most of the volunteers maybe spent 5-10 minutes of their day pulling this off. Many hands make light work. DO NOT EVER DOUBT what your five minutes of giving a day can do, especially with a community like Common Ground Childcare.
Warmest Thanks and Love,
Ms. LJ
#GiveTime: Community and Causes
Hi there! LJ Donnell here with some incredible (and quick!) ideas to #GiveTime to your community! This is a part of our #GiveFundsGiveTime Campaign for #GivingTuesday, so if you need more ideas, visit THIS PAGE. We also ask that if you have any excellent ideas of your own that aren’t listed here, PLEASE share them in the comments!! A community is always better when we work together.
So far, our suggestions are:
5 minutes a night knitting/crocheting/making blankets for Project Linus
Do click throughs on charity sites
Sign petitions
Call your local representative and talk to the about an issue
Draw inspirational chalk messages around your neighborhood
Draw loving chalk messages and pictures on the sidewalk of your local hospital so patience can see them out the window
Write post cards to senior citizens and other high-risk populations who are stuck in quarantine and away from their families. Example Here
Share/Amplify social media messages for local businesses, charities, and local activist groups. — I know this doesn’t sound like much… but it really means the world to people trying to get their messages out there. It takes you very little time, and you could make a big difference to their business or cause. Even something as small as sharing a “Missing Pet” post from your local neighborhood’s facebook could make a world of difference for a family.
Volunteer as your Cal de sac’s glass recycling person — okay, this one may be a 15/20 minute task once a week. Have your neighbors put their used glass products in bags and place them on their doorsteps, then you take them to the nearest glass recycling bins. You could also set up a round-robin sort of thing, and it’s as easy as making a post on your neighborhood’s facebook or NextDoor page.
Pick up trash on your walk — You may be getting fresh air. You may be on a little run! You may be taking your kids out of the house to get rid of some of their energy. Either way, just have gloves in your pockets and a grocery bag so you can pick up trash you see on the walk. You’d be surprised how little effort it takes, and what a big difference it makes. Wildlife in the area is getting snared in disposable masks on the ground. It’s pretty awful. Every little bit you do, even if it’s just five minutes while you’re already walking outside, could save a precious life.
#GiveFundsGiveTime is all about giving what you can when you can, and not overtaxing. All good deeds make waves, no matter how small. Let’s make this holiday season as full of hope, magic, and love as we possibly can.
See you out there!
Ms. LJ
In the community: Peanuts for a Peanut Butter Company
On Monday, October `19th, I went with local business owner, Radhika Murari, in the Common Ground bus up to Maryland China Co. on an unusual mission!
Radhika is the owner of OmMade, an artisanal peanut butter company that is based here in Reston, VA and has gotten quite a lot of press recently for being awarded a grant to invest in peanut farming in Virginia, but she was in desperate need of another type of peanuts - environmentally safe, compostable packing peanuts.
She found a vendor up in Maryland about an hour and a half away, Maryland China Co, who sells them in bulk, but Radhika needed more than her small car could hold after making two trips in the last two weeks and going through them quickly!
So Common Ground came to the rescue! We were able to pack 16 bags onto the bus and help our community in a very cool way! In fact, as a thank you, Radhika offered to run a fundraiser for our center! She will be donating 20% of all sales through this link: http://www.ommadepb.com?aff=4 to our center!
The story of her peanut butter is a really cool one!
She was looking for a health peanut butter to feed her son. When she couldn’t find what she was looking for, she started making it. But once she started, it led her to experiment with different flavors!
This peanut butter isn’t just for kids. The chocolate and coconut are my favorites so far, but my friend is obsessed with the chai nirvana!
Radhika is incredibly humble about her business, saying that it belongs to the community and giving the credit to her success freely to the people who support her. However, anyone who has met her knows it’s her passion and work ethic, coupled with the best peanut butter in existence that deserves all the credit!
Please shop here: http://www.ommadepb.com?aff=4 to support both OmMadePB and Common Ground!
If you’re attending the center, choose local pick up and you can pick it up from the Center!

Saving our Planet: Recycling
Okay! So you want to be more green! You want to get those three R’s in action.
Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.
But where do you start?
We all know that change needs to happen on a world-wide scale. It seems all-encompassing, overwhelming. What can we do as our house, our family, our one person self?
Well, our kiddos are learning about just that. Starting in November, our Rising Stars and Honeybees classes will begin a RECYCLING unit! They will be sorting their recyclables, creating new things from old, and learning life-long habits to reduce their carbon footprint .
We recommend these books to help cement those essential insights on how to protect their world:
Lift-The-Flap Questions and Answers about Recycling Trash — Katie Daynes
A comprehensive, interactive book all about recycling that answers all your curious kid’s questions! The pictures are enchanting, the facts are sharp, the message is STICKY.
Planet Earth Mazes — Sam Smith
Does your kid love to doodle while they learn? Planet Earth Mazes is a book chock full of facts and enchanting images to capture your child while they solve complex mazes and exert their logic skills.
Be the Change, Make it Happen — Bernadette Russell
As we said above, it can be overwhelming to want to help, to enact BIG CHANGE, but be a small person. Bernadette Russell shows kids how even the littlest changes (and the littlest person) can change the course of the future.
These are incredible books to feed your kids’ appetite for knowledge and can be purchased at any time. But if you purchase them this weekend (October 23-26th) Common Ground gets 10% of the funds!
(Visit our Book Fair here)
In the meantime, here are some steps to get you going at home!
1) Look up your local recycling facility HERE
2) Learn which items can be recycled and how HERE
3) Find some creative/fun REUSE projects to do with your kids HERE
4) Find some ways to REDUCE your use of disposable products HERE
We will be posting more ways to do those 3R’s on our Facebook as well as easy tips to reduce your carbon footprint, so check us out! PLEASE also let us know what you are doing at home! We need to work as a team to keep this planet GREEN!!
Have a FANTASTIC DAY!
LJ and your Common Ground Team!
Winter Coat Closet 2020
It is only the beginning of November and already, all of us here at Common Ground are huddled in our warm winter coats. The kids look like happy, puffy little marshmallows in the Autumn chill while the teachers are laughing about matching their scarves and gloves with their masks.
Not everyone gets to enjoy the change of the season from a safe, comfortable position. Parents and children alike are facing a long, cold winter (and cold/flu season!) without proper attire.
PLEASE NOTE! If you or anyone you know needs help this winter, note the winter clothing distribution times. There is no shame in needing help. Click Here for all the programs available through Cornerstones.
Cornerstones, in partnership with the Hunter Mill District Supervisor’s Office, is once again operating the Hunter Mill District Winter Coat Closet for 2020 – 2021 in order to provide free winter coats, hats, gloves, mittens and scarves to all who need them.
We at Common Ground are encouraging our families, friends, teachers, neighbors, and readers to contribute new or gently used winter attire to their cause!
Donations can be dropped off at:
The Reston National Golf Course (until November 6th)
The Cornerstones Main Office (Oct. 15th-Jan. 4th)
These three days in the North County Government Building (Nov. 14th, December 12th, and January 9th).
Would you like to donate, but do not have the time to get over to the drop off station? Do you have any other questions or need clarification?
Contact LJ Donnell and she would be happy to help in any way.
