Season of Giving: Scholastic Fair
IT’S THE SEASON OF GIVING, AND WE WANT TO GET OUR KIDS IN ON THE ACTION!
We are doing an IN-PERSON Scholastic Book Fair November 29th-December 3rd (online shopping until December 12!), and along with doing your normal Holiday Shopping, we encourage you to contribute to our BOOK FUNDRAISER! Any book you buy for the fundraiser will be donated to a kiddo in need for Christmas.
We have heard how there will be a lot of shipping delays for the holidays. The bonus of our Scholastic Fair is that the books will be right here! You can bring them home, stash them in your present closet, and not be constantly checking your Amazon Orders to see if it will come on time. Give yourself the gift of Peace of Mind.
Kids are constantly bombarded with ads for toys. YouTube, streaming services, other kids on the playground, jingles from stores, shows WITH toys, books based on shows based on toys, it’s a consumeristic NIGHTMARE that is almost impossible to turn off.
What we are hoping for with our Scholastic Fair is to encourage kids to look around the fabulous, eye-catching, technicolor Smörgåsbord of books and pick out a gift for someone else.
Books help stimulate the mind, body, and spirit. Books can inspire empathy for a character as intense and real as it could for a friend they know off the page. Books are an incredible outlet and emotional guide. Is there any better gift than a book? Yes. Teaching a kid to give that incredible, life changing gift to another kid.
DO YOU HAVE FRIENDS AND FAMILY AND NEIGHBORS WHO WOULD LIKE TO PARTICIPATE??
Make sure to share our link when it goes live! We will share it EVERYWHERE!!
NOVEMBER 5TH: TRUNK OR TREAT IS BACK!!
EDIT: DATE UPDATED FROM OCTOBER 29TH TO NOVEMBER 5TH PLEASE ADJUST YOUR CALENDARS. Scroll down for an updated FAQ.
IT IS THAT SPOOKY TIME AGAIN!! We have been waiting since last year and are SO EXCITED to trunk or treat with our families.
WHAT: Common Ground Trunk or Treat Spooky Spectacular!
WHEN: November 5th from 4:30-5:30PM
WHERE: Common Ground Childcare Upper Lot
WHY: To provide a safe, outdoor event for our families and children to enjoy Halloween together in their Covid Cohorts.
ALL KIDS ARE ENCOURAGED TO DRESS UP! They will be taken out to the trunks and tables to trick or treat with each of their classes starting at 4:30PM. Our School Aged children will also be setting up a (not so) Scary Haunted House for the kiddos who are waiting for their turn!! There will be music and dancing, treats, and maybe a few TRICKS!
HOW CAN YOU HELP: Just like last year, we need volunteers! We need parents who are willing to decorate EITHER their trunks or a rectangular table! Parents can provide treats, stickers, little favors, anything they like, and can pick any theme they like for their decorations!! We just want as many trunks/tables as we can get. Make sure to dress up!!
Sign up HERE for a slot and help us make this the best Halloween yet!!!
We are going to give you some FAQ answers below, but if you have any more questions please feel free to email us.
This is a Common Ground community-wide event! We have a ton of parent volunteers running trunks and tables for our students, but you don’t have to be a volunteer to show up! The event is from 4:30PM-5:30PM and we encourage you all to come and enjoy the festivities! The Trunk or Treat is in the upper lot, please join us.
Rain or Shine we are outside: We want all our families to be able to participate, but we also want everyone to be safe from the Covid-19 pandemic. We have seen the forecast for Friday, and it does look wet! So we have a couple of mitigation tactics.
We will be putting up as many of our tents as possible! If you have a little outdoor cover you could lend us, we would really appreciate it.
Have rain gear ready just in case! Rain jackets, rain boots, anything that helps you embrace the mantra “no bad weather, only bad clothes!”
If it gets truly torrential or it’s active lightning, we will, of course, pack it in early to keep everyone safe. We have a hard stop at 5:30PM so, while we will try to “wait it out” if this happens, we know our limitations.
Costumes Costumes Costumes! We recommend sending your kid in normal clothes, but putting a costume in your child’s backpack! That way they don’t have to wear a costume all day, but they can participate in Trunk or Treat all dressed up.
Pizza Pizza Party Party!!
On Friday, October 15th, we had a DAY LONG PIZZA PARTY!
We are big fans of themes here at Common Ground, and if there is an opportunity to integrate FUN into eating, we are going to take it!
All of our classes got to have Ledo’s cheese pizza, and they chowed down! Even our littlest Common Ground champions got into the fun.
That night, we had several families and friends who continued the pizza party fun! Some ordered from their favorite restaurant, some made pizzas from scratch, and some got the best of both worlds by making individual pizzas from our Little Caesar’s Fundraiser!
Part of the awesome benefit of the LITTLE CAESAR’S PIZZA KITS is that picky eaters get to MAKE their own pizza, and know EXACTLY what goes into it! Maybe they try a little bit of cheese while they put it on. Maybe they lick the sauce spoon, or like the look of the little olive circles so much that they use them to make a pizza smiley face. At the end, once it’s all baked, maybe the kiddos are so proud that they want to try the food that THEY MADE THEMSELVES. Give them agency over what they put on their pizza. Maybe they don’t want to try the sauce. Maybe they just want to add olive oil and rosemary to the bread. Maybe they want to put the cheese on before the sauce or wrap the pepperonis inside the dough!
Remember: You aren’t just making pizza. You are making little independent learners who aren’t afraid to experiment. You are rewarding their curiosity and cherishing the experience rather than being tied to convention or recipe. And who knows? Maybe Banana pizza with cinnamon topping is your next family tradition.
THANK YOU FOR CREATING NEW MEMORIES WITH US! Remember! Even when we are apart, we are together.

Common Ground Class of 2021 - Graduation Ceremony
Please Note: This post is for parents of children in our Honeybees and Owls classes only.
It’s the end of our school year and its time for a Graduation Celebration!
The current state guidance allows us to have 100 people outdoors for events, so this means that we are able to have a proper Graduation Ceremony this year! In years past, we have just graduated the Honeybees that were going on to Kindergarten the following year, but because since our 2020 Honeybees missed out on a Graduation last year AND this may be the only time we ever have an Owls class, we thought we’d let them graduate this year as well!
The event will be on Thursday, May 27th at 4:30 pm and will last approximately 1 hour.
Both classes have prepared a song, Miss Tanisha will be our keynote speaker and will read the book that she has written, we will have some light refreshments as well!
Due to the restrictions from the state, we can only confirm that each child can have two (2) guests attend. However, we will do our best to accommodate requests for extra tickets! Please make sure to sign up here:
CG Birthday: How to Celebrate with Us!
We are turning 49 on April 6th, but we are celebrating ALL MONTH LONG!!
Normally this would warrant one of our excellent all-school events with food trucks, moon bounces, a giant cake, maybe a carnival…
But since we can’t do that, we are finding a ton of new, exciting ways to celebrate, and we want to tell you how you can join us from your own home.
Sign up for our Spring Stuffy Sleepover!
Our featured author Andrea Lamont will be doing a reading of her new book “The Friendship Rock” for the stuffys and their kiddo friends at home. This event is a total blast that we really think is a perfect way to celebrate together while apart.
Participate in and Share our Book Fair!
From April 12th-April19th, 24/7, you can participate in our Online Book Fair with Scrawl Books! There will be readings, book recommendations, and wish lists! Whether you are supporting your classroom, buying your kids’ new favorite book, or finding your next “relax by the fire pit” Spring read, any book you buy supports our fundraising efforts to raise money for our Non-Profit mission. The best birthday present you can give Common Ground is helping us raise money for our educational efforts.
Host your own Fundraiser on Facebook!
Our Non-Profit missions benefit our students, our teachers, our outreach, our support of much needed educational reform. By supporting our beloved school, we are also supporting our community! Helping us raise money to support those efforts is an AMAZING WAY to help us celebrate our birthday.
Here is our Our PayPal Donation Link where anyone can donate! Thank you for widening our impact.
You can Celebrate “The Week of the Young Child” with us!
We have several activities we are doing with all of the children at the center, but here are some ideas for how to celebrate at home!
Music Monday: Instead of turning on the tv when you get home, turn on the stereo and have a dance party!! Show your kids your favorite songs, and let them show you theirs, make a big Youtube playlist of your favorites, dance your heart out!
Pro Tip: Eighties Pop makes great Dance Music, here is our Owl’s Spotify List.
Struggling to come up with songs? Check out our Mister Josh Rock at the Blocks series on Youtube!
Tasty Tuesday: THROW YOUR OWN COMMON GROUND BIRTHDAY PARTY!! We know putting together something complicated on a Tuesday night feel like it’ll take more energy than you have, so you can always save this for a free weekend day. Whether you decide to try it on a weeknight, or a weekend, this does not have to be over the top to be special with your kiddos. Big Bird has a super easy Banana Bread Recipe! Make healthy banana bread “cupcakes,” stick candles in them, sing Happy Birthday, and chow down!
Work Together Wednesday: At school we will be planting our new class gardens!! We encourage you to plant local, pollinator-friendly plants with your kiddo so they can contribute to a healthy environment. Every little act brings great goodness to the world, and if your kid learns that early with you, they will be more confident and ready to do more and more each day.
Artsy Thursday: Draw chalk art on your sidewalk. Send postcards to family members you haven’t seen awhile with pictures from your kids. Let your kids paint with ice cubes or paint rocks to leave on your local trails. Any little art project that you do with your kid is time spent creating something lovely in the world, no matter what your skill level is. This is also a perfect opportunity to show teacher appreciation: If you want to make your teacher’s day, have your kiddo make an art project for them telling their teacher just how much they matter.
Family Friday: Movie Night! Family Walk! Shadow Charades! Board games! If you want to make it Common Ground themed, this is a fine night to throw the CG Birthday Party! You can also do a “name that teacher” guessing game.
All-Smiles Saturday: Sign your kids up for our Saturday Session on April 10th! While your kids are partying it up with us, you can relax, go on a date, do some much needed yard work, finish that 1000 piece puzzle you’ve been saving, anything that makes you smile!
HOWEVER: If SPRING CLEANING without interruption is what really makes your Saturday perfect, we highly suggest saving any gently used clothing/linens, small household appliances, personal accessories, and books for our JUNE FUND-DRIVE DONATION EVENT! By cleaning out your houses and freeing up your space, you could earn your school BIG MONEY. It’s our favorite type of “fundraiser,” because it is a WIN WIN WIN. You get a cleaned out bureau and don’t create more waste, we get much needed funds for our various educational objectives, and someone gets much needed “new to them” items for an affordable price from UNIQUE without creating more waste.
Whatever you do to celebrate, however you do it, please send us pictures. We would love to make a huge birthday picture collage for the center to show all the ways we honored Common Ground Childcare. Show us your cakes, your decorations, your art projects and gardens! Whatever it looks like, it was done with love, and that is everything to us.
Love Love Love,
Your CG Family
P.S. Let us know how you plan on participating on Common Ground’s Birthday in the Comments!
Friends of CG Fridays: Kona Ice of North Fairfax!
Kona Ice of North Fairfax Facebook Page
Order “Kurbside” from Steve and Natalia of North Fairfax
Booking Requests for Kona Ice in Fairfax County
We do not have enough nice things to say about our Local Kona Ice Truck heroes, Steve and Natalia Hammond. Whenever we need them to make an event more magical (or just a hot day cooler) they show up ready to help us celebrate. Natalia even drives the truck herself over to see us in our parking lot to make sure we get the best care!
What is Kona Ice?
Kona Ice is a MOBILE DESSERT FOOD TRUCK that serves shaved ice in a variety of technicolor flavors! You can find them at events, you can invite them to YOUR event, and you can order curbside deliciousness from your local truck! We cannot get enough of it over here.
We have a lot of children and teachers with varying allergies, and Kona Ice makes sure we can include EVERYONE! They are Gluten-Free, Fat-Free, Nut-Free, Dairy-Free, Lactose-Free. No GMO’s, No HFC’s. You can even get sugar-free if you need to! It really makes everyone smile, which is our goal here at Common Ground, and why we treasure Steve and Natalia’s steadfast commitment to customer joy!
We are writing about them TODAY specifically because, on this first truly warm Friday of Spring here at Common Ground, they came to celebrate with us!! They helped us make sure every and teacher got a tasty treat and did not break the bank! If there is a better way to ring in Spring break, I haven’t seen it yet… We hope to have them over many times this summer to make our camp days extra special.
Natalia, you are an absolute gem, we loved having you today and so appreciate all you and Steve do for us!
Help us support them! Look into booking a Kona-Ice truck for any of your socially distant activities, and recommend them to anyone around who could use a treat with a smile-guarantee.
Love Love Love,
Your CG Family
Saturday Hours!? Yes PLEASE! (at least for one day)
Spring has sprung, and if you’re anything like me, it means that you have torn your house apart in an effort to clean up from a year of being at home. Also if you’re like me, it means that you haven’t quite gotten all the way through putting it back together again. Yet, unlike me, you have a valid excuse - kiddos at home - as to why you haven’t found the time to get it together.
That’s where Common Ground comes in! We are happy to announce that we will be open for 5 hours on Saturday, March 20th for our very first “Spring Clean Saturday!”
Bring your kids to enjoy a fun day at Common Ground from 9:30am to 2:30pm on Saturday, March 20th! We will have pizza, play outside, if weather allows, we will get out the moon bounce, and we are looking at some other fun treats!
This event is FREE for all currently attending families! We are asking for a $25 donation per child if you wish to contribute something, as this event kicks off Common Ground’s Birthday Celebration! Please donate through the PayPal Giving Fund linked here.
I got the idea when I was chatting with Miss LJ while she was in the car on her way to her parents house with the kids, so that her husband could “reset” their house for the week. With everyone really living in their homes during the pandemic, this seemed like a great way that Common Ground could give back to our families!
We hope that you enjoy this little gift from us, and if it goes well, we will do it again!

Friends of CG Fridays!: Busses and Blood Drives
We have had such a whirlwind week!
And we have A LOT of people to thank for it being a great success. We are so full of gratitude, in fact, that we have decided to institute a NEW TRADITION!
“Friends of CG” Fridays will be blog posts released once a week where we thank groups, companies, teams, and other amazing people who have helped us go above and beyond.
We are starting off strong with THREE BIG THANK YOUS!
Jersey Mike’s at Hunters Woods Plaza: When we reached out to our local Jersey Mike’s Sub shop at Hunters Woods, we were looking for coupons they could give us for the “Thank You Bags” we wanted to give the Blood Donors at St. Anne’s blood drive today. Their response was so warm and giving that we were truly humbled. They gave us three different kinds of coupons, a bunch of menus, and promised to work with us in the future! They are also working with Cornerstones this month to raise money ALL MONTH to help with programs for in-need families of Reston. This giving month culminates in their HUGE event on March 31st, where all the proceeds they earn that day from open to close go to Cornerstones’ programs. We are thanking them not only for what they do for us (and for their delicious subs that make GREAT staff lunches) but what they do for their community. Way to go, you guys, you are super stars!!
Amphora Bakery at Sunset Park Drive: Full disclosure, LJ has been working with Amphora bakery since before she worked at Common Ground. Whenever we have asked for a quality bakery to work with, Amphora always comes up. They are helpful, quick, professional, kind, and DELICIOUS. When we called and asked for help getting cookies for our blood drive this week, they gave us an INCREDIBLE price and DID NOT skimp on that delectable chocolate chip cookie. They were so good we got way more than we needed so we could share with staff, who could not say enough good things about them (and always came back to see if there are more!) Thank you so much, Amphora! Can’t wait to work together again!
Wiygul Automotive in Herndon, VA: We have been a long time customer of the Wiygul Automotive location on Grant Street in Herndon. Because they service our school busses, which carry our most precious cargo, we need to have the utmost faith in their work. Along with being fast and efficient, they always take care of us with absolute professionalism and precision, and never hesitate to make sure we get a good non-profit price. Not only did they service and return BOTH of our busses this week, they also took care of Ms. LJ’s vehicle as fast as possible so that we could continue working without delay! We recommend them to anyone and everyone because we can personally vouch for their dependability over several years of use.
Keep a look out for our Featured Friends on Fridays! If you want to be a featured friend? give us a shout! We would love to work with you.
Love Love Love,
LJ and your CG Family
St. Anne's Episcopal Blood Drive!
As 2021 presses on, there are so many people who are in need! It can be overwhelming to decide where to start, and sometimes it is hard to tell if you’re really making a difference. (Although here at Common Ground, we really believe that all good deeds ripple out, no matter how small).
Donating blood costs no money and very little time, but it is a constant, essential need! Every 2 seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood. 1 donation can potentially save up to 3 lives.
St. Anne’s Episcopal Church is hosting a blood drive on March 5th!

WHERE: St. Anne’s Episcopal Church! There will be an INOVA Bloodmobile

Save the Date: Spirit Nights
In 2021 we will be having MONTHLY SPIRIT NIGHTS!
What’s a Spirit Night?
A Spirit Night is when a local restaurant supports Common Ground Childcare by giving a percentage of their sales profits for one evening! All you have to do is order food and let the restaurant know you are there to support Common Ground Childcare, and VOILA! You are helping us fundraise just by eating a good meal with your family!
It used to be we would gather at a restaurant and all eat together. These “Spirit Nights” were some of our absolute favorite evenings, especially in the cold months! The kids loved seeing their teachers and each other in a non-school setting.
These times will come again. And while we are waiting for them to return, we have decided that getting into the habit of scheduling them once a month will assure we all remember to save the dates!
We will post them as we get them, so be on the look out. SEE YOU THERE! And don’t forget to say “we’re here to support Common Ground.”
Our January and February Spirit Nights are on the calendar already!
On Saturday, January 16th you can support Common Ground by picking up Panera for your family! Delicious soups and hot fresh bread are the perfect combination to combat that cold, winter wind! (Click below for more info)
On Wednesday, February 10th our Spirit Night is at the North Point Baskin-Robbins! They are currently refurbishing their store so it will be EXTRA snazzy for those (almost) Valentine treats… Bring the kids, or make it a date!
Every Day is a Holiday: Pet Costumes and Polka Dots
NATIONAL DRESS YOUR PET IN A COSTUME DAY!
Thursday, January 14th we will be dressing our pets and/or stuffed animals in costumes! Send us a picture of your pet/Stuffy dressed to the nines and we will make a big collage of our Common Ground animal crew!
NATIONAL WEAR POLKA DOTS DAY!
Big dots! Little Dots! Multicolored dots! Dots with squiggles! Dots with stripes! Dots like Dalmatian Puppies! On Friday, January 22nd we will be wearing polka dots here at Common Ground and ask you to do the same!! Send us your pics so we can make our Polka Dot-Palooza Picture Gallery!
