Policy for Extreme Weather
Common Ground Childcare Weather Extremes Policy
At Common Ground Childcare, we are committed to providing children with meaningful outdoor experiences as part of a high-quality early childhood program. Outdoor play supports physical health, mental well-being, and learning across all domains. Our goal is to provide at least 120 minutes of outdoor time daily for each child, weather permitting. We adjust our schedule and practices to prioritize outdoor time while keeping children safe and comfortable during weather extremes.
General Guidelines
Outdoor time is planned for all children daily, unless weather conditions make it unsafe.
Staff monitor weather conditions in real-time using local forecasts and the heat index/wind chill chart.
Modifications are made based on age, activity level, duration of exposure, and individual needs.
Hot Weather Practices
Outdoor play is limited when the heat index is 90°F or above, and may be canceled when it exceeds 100°F, especially for infants and toddlers.
Children are encouraged to play in shaded areas; structured activities are moved to shaded or indoor locations when necessary.
Cold water is readily available to all children throughout outdoor time.
Gatorade or an electrolyte alternative is provided during school-aged summer camp for rehydration after vigorous activity or in extreme heat.
Staff monitor children for signs of heat-related illness and respond immediately to any concerns.
Families are encouraged to dress children in lightweight, breathable clothing and to apply sunscreen before arrival.
Cold Weather Practices
Outdoor play is limited when the wind chill is below 20°F, and canceled when it falls below 15°F, especially for younger children.
Children are dressed in appropriate winter clothing, including hats, gloves, coats, and boots.
Staff shorten outdoor periods in cold weather and may rotate children inside to warm up.
Families are expected to provide labeled winter gear daily in cold seasons.
Poor Air Quality & Other Environmental Conditions
Outdoor time may be modified or canceled during:
Air Quality Index (AQI) levels of 100 or higher.
Heavy rain, thunderstorms, snow, ice, or high winds.
Any declared Code Red or emergency alert for environmental or weather-related concerns.
Indoor gross motor play is provided when outdoor play is not possible.
Communication & Documentation
Any adjustments to outdoor time due to weather extremes are communicated to families through Brightwheel or posted notifications.
Staff remain trained to assess weather conditions and implement this policy consistently across classrooms and age groups.
